The Sock Bun: How-To and A Man’s Opinion

Putting hair up in a sleek bun is always a classic look – those ballerinas always appear so lovely, don’t they? Even more flattering and fun is a chunky, slightly messy bun, which is what made the “sock bun” a trending look this year.

Not hip to the sock bun? Yes, it’s created using an actual sock and it gives that bun some volume to make it more stylish.

Here are the steps to create the look:

  • Snip off the toes off a sock. (Make use of those orphans whose partner got “lost in the dryer!”)
  • Roll the tube of fabric into a doughnut.
  • Pull your hair into ponytail on top of your head.
  • Pull the sock doughnut onto the ponytail and push down to the base.
  • If your hair is fine or short and needs some umph, give the ponytail a little teasing.
  • Pull the hair around the sock doughnut to cover and bobbie pin at the base, wrapping the ends under the sock doughnut.
  • Leave it a little messy for a full, sexy bedhead look.
  • Voila, you’re a supermodel! This also gives you a little statuesque height so work it!

My Sock Bun

Now if you don’t want to use a spare sock, Claire’s just came out with a hair doughnut made of mesh, which also allows you to stick bobbie pins in it, nice!

And what do guys think of the sock bun look? My boyfriend seems to like it. Of course you don’t have to tell them there’s an old sock in your hair! I had a good LOL at an article I came across on The Frisky who got one man’s opinion on finding out his date had a sock in her bun –

I would be taken aback if I found out she was stuffing her hair bun with a block of aged Parmesan.”

Read more in the The Frisky HERE.

So have fun with your new hairstyle, it’s a lifesaver on bad hair days!

Rock the sock,

Nail Art: Polish, Press-Ons and Stick-Ons

I’ve become addicted to nail art. I used to never pay much attention to my nails. In my hurried, blogging life I’m pretty hard on my nails. I was thrilled when quick-dry polish came out because I could make my nails look half decent in a jiffy. But it always chipped away after a couple of days.

In watching the current booming nail art trend (see my growing Pinterest board), I found myself fascinated with all the possibilities of achieving really beautiful or funky nails. So I’ve started experimenting with polish – matte, glittered, french tips in offbeat colors, ombre and gradient looks. I’ve come up with some cute looks and some real disasters! It’s all about practice, practice practice – and just having fun with it! A quick tip – YouTube has some great nail art tutorials so check them out!

Kimmie Kyees Press-On Nails for Elegant Touch

A couple of options in the stores these days just may be my favorites for getting a quick, fun look that is durable to boot – press-on nails and stick-on polish. Plus, I had the good luck of catching celebrity manicurist Kimmie Kyees do a presentation at ULTA Beauty for some great application tips. Read all about it in my latest beauty article for Yahoo! HERE.

Eyebrow Stencils: Put Some Wow in Your Brows

I have eyebrow envy. When I see a girl with really great eyebrows, I can’t help but stare at them. For some reason, my brow natural shape never looks quite right. Perhaps it’s because I shaved them in my teens to draw them in all crazy and punk rock. Now they are getting their revenge. But I have found something that helps – eyebrow stencils.

Since I discovered this handy little item, I’ve never looked back and I have three brands I like to rotate for different variations on my chosen “medium arch.” Read all about ’em in my beauty article for Yahoo! HERE.

I’ll raise a brow to that!

Lip Color That Lasts

There’s nothing like a kisser that goes POW! Color-drenched lips can really define a look. But I find so many lipsticks go on full of color and disappear a few minutes later. I recently discovered two fantastic brands that make highly-pigmented lip colors that LAST.

Read on to my article for Yahoo! Beauty – your lips will thank you!

How to Correctly Apply Perfume

The last thing I do before I leave the house is give myself a spritz of perfume. A scent can be as much of an accessory as your favorite pair of heels. I discovered a perfume that combines both – Nine West’s Love Fury. This bottle of perfume literally stopped me in my tracks when I spotted it in a store window – the cap is actually a stiletto heel! I would buy it just for the bottle but thank goodness it smells great – a blend of fruits and florals with mild notes of amber.  A great smell is one thing, but do you know how to correctly apply perfume?

Video: How to Correctly Apply Perfume

Once you find the scents that appeal to you and represent your personality, it can only go so far if you don’t know how to apply perfume to get the most out of it. And here’s a tip, you don’t have to use much. Learn more in my video on how to apply perfume correctly:

Rock of Ages – Nails It!

As mentioned in my previous post, “Rock of Ages” just opened in theatres, so I felt compelled to put a little ‘80s glam metal into my look just for the occasion. I had to giggle with delight when I spotted the “Rock of Ages” nail product in the store – an assortment of peel-on polishes by Sally Hansen in rock-worthy designs such as leopard, lace, stars, guitars and more. I opted for the silver and black zippered look and mixed it up by putting them just on a few nails and  solid black polish on the other nails.

Now I just have to bust out my teasing comb and Aqua Net to get my big hair on and I’m ready! For more tips on how to get a “Rock of Ages” fashion sense, check out this slideshow article in The Blush.

Nail Files: The Painted Nail Party

Nothing like a last minute party invite to liven up your week! I got an email from my pal Maxine from Vanity Girl Hollywood* to join her at her makeover station at a party celebrating the new hair salon & blow-out bar at The Painted Nail, home of the “Nail Files” reality show on the TV Guide channel. If you haven’t seen the show, owner Katie Cazorla brings a whole lot of Hollywood glamour to the land of mani-pedis, with a big celebrity clientele and spa-like experience — you never know what’s going to happen! But what I like best is the surprisingly affordable prices for service in a ultra hip atmosphere! My kind of place!

The party was an Alice in Wonderland-theme with Katie decked out as Alice herself and lots of beautiful girls and handsome dudes in Wonderland glam for a surreal tea party complete with whimsical treats and amazing decor. TV cameras and boom mics where swinging around everywhere following Katie and her music producer husband, Walter Afanasieff  wherever they went. I’m sure we’ll see what drama ensued in the next episode of “Nail Files”!

We were also treated to music by girl trio The Goods and Alex Hughes, who got the crowd going with her great energy. Each guest was given a beauty card to visit all of the makeover stations for a little primp treat. I had my lips done in of-the-moment tangerine at Maxine’s Vanity Girl makeup station by makeup artist, Zarah Villarreal. She did a fantastic job – thanks doll! The Vanity Girl “glam squad” also included, makeup artist/blogger Olivia Danielle and makeup artist Crystal Strayer.

Then I was off to get a hot pink hair extension and a splash of blue hair chalk coloring. Lastly, was the nail “Ice Cream Bar” before I could pick up the amazing gift bag stuffed to the brim with all kinds of beauty samples and goodies I can’t wait to try out and write about in future posts.

5 Fashion, Beauty and Lifestyle Tips to Green Your Summer

Summer is here and that means warmer temperatures, outdoor fun and vacation time. All that sunshine should serve as a friendly reminder that there are things you can do to green your summer:

Keep cool. Warmer temperatures mean using the air conditioner more. Cut back with other ways to stay cool. I’m a big fan of fans. I have one in each room and they keep my place surprising cool with the air circulation. Or as Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability (LOHAS) executive director, Ted Ning suggests, “Open windows in the morning and on the opposite sides of the room to allow a natural flow of coolness and moisture through your home.”

Also try insulating window treatments such as glass films and heat reflecting drapes to reduce the amount of warmth that comes in. If your property allows it, consider solar panels. I recently discovered solar shutters that absorb that sunshine and put it on your energy grid! It’s a great solution for renters or condo owners.

Dress wisely. When shedding layers for lighter options, look for fashions made with organic cotton, which means it is produced on farms that use methods that have a low impact on the environment. Or instead of buying new, shop your closet for items you’ve forgotten about. I also wear a lot of vintage fashion – the ultimate reuse clothing. I love the styles from eras past and each piece is one of a kind, which definitely adds some personality to my wardrobe.

Eat smart. Yum, fresh juicy summer fruits are a delight of summer – but harmful pesticides do not sound tasty. Know what you’re biting into – each piece of produce in your grocery store has a sticker with a code on it. Go for “fine number 9,” which means the fruit is organically grown. A code that starts with 4 means it is conventionally grown – and sprayed. You’ll probably find more organic choices at a farmer’s market, which also helps you keep it local, and it’s a great day out! Eco lifestyle expert and author of “The Conscious Kitchen,” Alexandra Zissu offers this suggestion, “Talk to farmers and ask what they use to spray. Some use Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which is almost as good as organic. Another good resource is the Environmental Working Group’s dirty dozen and clean fifteen lists to find out which fruits contain the least amount of pesticide residues.”

Protect your skin.  A few minutes of sun is good for Vitamin D but more than that and the sun’s UV rays can damage skin. That means wrinkles and skin cancer – yuck! To keep skin beautiful and youthful, be sure to have some fresh sunscreen on hand and just like the food you eat, read the ingredient labels. According to LOHA’s Ning, “Some some sunscreens can contribute to cancer due to their mutagenic and free radical generating properties. Zinc oxide is a mineral that provides complete UVB/UVA protection.” Some green sunscreens options include Kabana, Coola  and MyChelle. If you really want a tan, opt for a sunless tanning lotion. Lavera makes an organic, award-winning self tanner.

Vacation time! Summer is a great time to getaway but transportation can put a big dent in your carbon footprint. I love taking a “staycation” and just being at home, seeing friends and catching up on much-needed sleep. When you do travel, pick destinations that are walkable or check listings for cab companies that use hybrid vehicles. Hotels are also becoming more socially responsible. Orbitz has listings for eco-friendly options. If you find yourself being quite the jet-setter, CabonFund provides a way to calculate your carbon offset and donate to your choice of carbon-reducing projects.

So enjoy your summer, be healthy and do the same for the planet.

Hair Stylin’

It was time for a haircut. I’ve had my hair long pretty much since high school and I’d had enough. I’m a big fan of pinned-up retro do’s and with my long hair, I just didn’t know what to do with it all. Plus, long hair is heavy and high maintenance. I realized it had grown all the way down to the middle of my back – it just had to go.

But what to do with it? I searched for images of bob-cuts to shoulder-length and one look kept jumping out at me – Sophia Loren in the ’60s. Click here for my inspiration photo. Really can’t go wrong with that look! While I’m no Sophia, the style was what I wanted – full, thick hair that could work from bedhead to super styled.

So off to my hairdresser I went. Elizabeth at Bella Bella Hair B’tique in Pasadena did a fantastic job, and also comforted me when I just about had a panic attack after the big snip of my giant ponytail. I decided to keep my hair so I could make it into extensions – hey, I can always clip it back in when I want it!

For tips on how to make your own hair extensions, check out this YouTube video.

I originally wanted to donate my hair to help make wigs for cancer patients, but I learned they wouldn’t accept hair that had been colored, and boy has my hair been a few colors! If you have virgin hair that’s long enough that you can spare 8-12 inches, check out Locks of Love or Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths hair donation programs. It’s a fantastic way to put your hair to good use!

I’m loving my new bouncy cut and I’m getting the hang of styling it. Stay tuned for lots of photos of fun new hairdo’s!

Hair today, gone tomorrow,
K.
