The Social Scene and Street Fashion of Social Media Week LA 2013

k150_23SZDheel iconIf you love social media like I do, a whole week of discussions, Tweeting, Facebooking and Instagraming with like-minds is like being dropped in a little connected oasis. And that’s just what happened when a major digital marketing conference descended on the westside of Los Angeles. See what happened when I checked out the social scene and street fashion of Social Media Week LA 2013

The Social Scene of Social Media Week

Most of the events took place at ROC’s collaborative workspace headquarters in Santa Monica as hundreds of mobile-device-carrying social enthusiasts went from panel discussions to masterclasses to parties. I attended every day and got a headful of ideas to take back to my social media efforts for world domination!

Celebrity Faces of Social Media Week

Of course, some of my favorite events included those focused on the ever-exploding online opportunities in fashion and beauty online including:

  • Rodger Berman CEO (and husband) of Rachel Zoe on the transformation and disruption of the fashion biz with the mega success of Rachel Zoe, Inc.
  • A panel featuring blogger Aimee Song, websites WhoWhatWear, StyleHaul and brands BeachMint, ShoeDazzle  and Junk Food Clothing on who’s winning when it comes to brand marketing promotion – celebrities or bloggers. Answer: the bloggers!
  • A chat with Michelle Phan, one of the best known beauty bloggers out there, discussing her career and the launch of her new cosmetics line “Em.” Plus, even more projects she has in the works!

As a journalist turned blogger, I was also excited to see one of my favorite interviewers, Larry King, interviewing Star Trek star turned social media icon George Takei.

The Street Fashion of Social Media Week

I also hit a fashion and beauty soiree where a roomful of fashionistas flaunted their best outfits and learned how to grow their presence online. See my previous blog post. I had good time style spotting all week. Here are some of the fashionable folks caught on the Stiletto-cam!

I loved having the opportunity to meet all the people at all the parties. And of course, I had lots of fun planning my daily outfits!

Plus, I was excited to discover so many amazing companies who are doing so much with content creation on the web. You were nothing short of inspiring – and I’ll be contacting you! I see some partnerships in my future!

As I gear up to build up this blog and relaunch my YouTube channel (stay tuned for details!) I’m thrilled at the possibilities that await. Stay tuned. I have lots in store for you.

Thanks Social Media Week for the fun and inspiration!

SMWLA The Style of Social Media: Fashion & Beauty Soiree

k150_23SZDheel iconSocial Media Week LA pulled in the city’s top talent in tech, social, entertainment, fashion and beauty to share, learn, snap photos and party for a week straight. My head has been spinning learning about all the amazing companies out there and exploring the potential of what can be done online. The sky seems the limit – especially when it comes to the fashion and beauty space.

I attended a very special panel discussion and evening soiree focused on just that at the Project Gallery in Hollywood. There I learned about best social platforms to be on, best times to post, and best practices for a successful presence online. Special thanks to the hosts Jackie Chambers, TGIF Guide and Bella Graham, Lipstick, Lace & Lattes and the panelists Style Fashion Week, Entertainment Reporter Nina Parker, Hello Society, 365 Hangers and Mark Quest of Forte-The Collective and of course, all the fashionable folks who attended who made for great style-spotting!

Pinup Girl Boutique: 1 Year Anniversary Party

k150_21heel iconIt was an extra special night at the Pinup Girl Boutique. Celebrating the store’s 1-year anniversary, the clothing brand proved they successfully have made the leap from an online retailer to a couture fashion name with an international following of pinups. They have not only created a clothing line but a glamorous, retro-inspired lifestyle to aspire to that is lived everyday by “Team Pinup,” the models who not only show the looks in the catalog but also work in the store, design the clothes, create the hairstyles,  and offer their talent as makeup artists. They created this one-stop-shop to allow everyone be the pinup bombshell they always wanted to be!

story

And they’ve clearly struck a cord with their audience, who love their monthly parties as a night to dress up and wear those fabulous Pinup Couture fashions.  These gatherings are always a great night to  go shopping because it’s like a living fashion show,  seeing so many people in the Pinup Girl Clothing.  My wish list always grows when I see what dress look good in real life. Fortunately, the parties coincide with Magnolia Park’s Ladies Night Out shopping nights when discounts of 10% and up make these fabulous fashions a little easier on the pocketbook.

For the anniversary party, the place was jam-packed. Drinks flowed, new friends were made and I was blown away by the talent lined up for the night. On the small stage in the center of the store, comedienne April Richardson, who sports her own retro flair and Bettie bangs, opened up the night and was hilarious.

story1

Next up was Andra Day whose soulful voice was so moving and she got us all grooving! She was discovered after going viral on YouTube with her covers of pop song mashups. She is currently signed with Warner Bros. Records and working her debut album.

Lastly but certainly not least, was Katrina Parker who gained attention for coming in 2nd place on “The Voice” TV show. She looked so sweet in her big ‘60s-style hairdo and her voice blew the place away. Katrina is gearing up to release an album funded by Kickstarter.

Both singers are right on the cusp of big time fame and now we can say we saw them early on!

story3

story4

I always find it funny when the Pinup Boutique has performers in the store, they always comment, “this is the best looking crowd we’ve ever played to!” And it’s true, the pinup customer knows how to dress up for a night! The store was filled with beauties working their retro-inpsired look, which is elegant and sexy. Talk about some great people watching! And the night was capped with a toast as Team Pinup gathered on stage to thank their customers, raffle off some prizes and introduce a new line of Pinup Couture handbags for which the crowd gave a loud cheer. Did I mention my wish list was growing?

Clever Vintage: ’60s Soiree Fashion Show

k150_21heel iconThere couldn’t be a more glamorous way to spend a summer evening than recreating a night in the French Riviera in the 1960s. I was modeling as part of a fashion show for Clever Vintage Clothing and LA Wine Tasting’s Mingling Soiree series. On the agenda was a collection of to-die-for ‘60s vintage fashions, great drinks and entertainment by French-born singer Adele Jacques performing French pop with her group Paris Loves LA, all poolside at the Luxe Hotel in Bel Air. It really felt like we had been transported for a night to elegant and carefree St. Tropez.

Backstage in the Clever Vintage dressing room, there it was a girl bomb of makeup, hairspray, false eyelashes, bauble jewelry and shoes everywhere as we got dressed in the exquisite collection curated by Dave Temple and Sabino Gutierrez. I had my hair done earlier in the afternoon by stylist Tony Medina of His Vintage Touch in a giant swirl of a beehive that went perfectly with my outfits for the night. See the photo on Instagram!

storyBackstageCollage

My daywear outfit was a melon-colored, mod, A-line dress with scoop neck and side pockets. My evening outfit was a stunning  paisley jumpsuit with harem paints, bead-trimmed tie belt and beaded neckline that was part of the Malcolm Starr “Home Collection” of the ‘60s when people threw fabulous cocktail parties in their stylish living rooms.

Our runway was along the pool and the fashions could not have had a more pecfect setting. There were many French people, dressed up in ‘60s inspired cocktail attire. The audience cheered for each model that passed and we smiled for a sea of phone cameras.

After each run we got to mingle with the audience and answer questions about our outfits. I had a hard time keeping my feet still because the music by DJ Marlon Fuentes was a mix of ‘60s pop, dance music and garage rock. I just wanted to hit the makeshift poolside dancefloor and shake and shimmy all night long! And I got to get a peek at Adele Jacques’ performance, which I adored. She embodied the endearing sexy bubbliness of Brigitte Bardot for sure! See a video from a past show:

At the end of the night it was hard to take off the fabulous outfits and go back to reality. I wish every night could be like a night in 1960s St. Tropez. Perhaps that’s what made it so special.

Au revoir!

Wine & Mid-Century Fashion Soiree

k150_20heel iconIt was a seductive Friday night in downtown. The temperature was perfectly mild and people were ready to shake off the work week, get dressed up and go out.  The Los Angeles Athletic Club provided a delicious, historic backdrop for an evening of elegant vintage fashion. The wine flowed from Los Angeles Wine Tasting, a silent auction brought bids for rarely seen candid photos of Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor and Frank Sinatra from the Frank Worth Collection, and the crowded room was ready to be dazzled by mid-century offerings from Clever Vintage Clothing from the era when glamour was definitely IN.

I was honored to be asked to be one of the models working the nightclub’s catwalk. After several fittings, each dress more beautiful than the next, it was decided I would wear two classic 1950’s silhouettes. First: a floral-print wiggle dress with a copper sheen Second: a black brocade, wide-collar, full-skirted party dress that buttoned down the front with a pop of a purple petticoat underneath.

channelingRitaSZD

It was all kinds of girliness backstage as we prepped hair and makeup (we all did our own) and slipped into this gorgeous cocktail attire. Then there was the lineup for Dave and Sabino of Clever Vintage to assess every fit and color and order in which we would appear. We carried numbers so the audience members could easily remember which dress they would like to purchase for themselves.

backstageSZD

What was great about this show was that all the models have been customers of Clever Vintage. We are all regular scenesters at vintage style events around town and we mostly all knew each other. We were real girls who live it and love it. Authentic pinups for sure and not a diva in the room, lots of girl bonding support in helping to fine-tune every detail.

Then it was time for our big moment. A walk through the room, a few spins, some poses for the cameras. Then a quick change to our second outfit to do it all over again. And the clothes were a hit! We all had a great time showing them off. Special thanks to Dave and Sabino for letting us all be supermodels for the night and to Jean-Baptiste Dhalluin of LA Wine Tasting for putting on this extraordinary event!

The Carrie Diaries: Be a Carrie

k150_19heel iconAs a huge “Sex and the City” fan, I tuned into the new series, “The Carrie Diaries” to see how they handled the prequel focused on the high school days of the now iconic character of Carrie Bradshaw. As a journalist turned blogger, I identitfed with Carrie’s character as well as her love of fashion and big city life. I was delighted to find the show to be a fun representation of the ’80s era and Carrie as a budding fashionista. It’s always inspiring to watch a show with great style to get some ideas to pluck for myself. And it’s even better when you know where to buy them. At the beginning of episode 112: “A First Time for Everything,” Carrie can be seen sporting the Up in the Tee Tops* from ModCloth and I just happen to love to shop that site. Here’s the link where you can get it for yourself.

Carrie2

During the season finale of “The Carrie Diaries,” Carrie wears three different pieces from the site. The first piece she wears is the Tilt-A-Twirl Dress from ModCloth.

Carrie Tilt A Twirl

Next Carrie wears the Music in Me Skirt in Mix Tape from ModCloth. This A-line skirt features bright cassette tapes set on a black backdrop. Super cute!

Lastly, Carrie can be seen in the Cool With Me Top in Citrus from ModCloth featuring cap sleeves, a defined waist, and a fruity, retro print. Check out all of these great styles on Episode 113: “Kiss Yesterday Goodbye”.

Now you too can be a “Carrie”!

When Fashion Meets Business: FAB Counsel Event

k150_19heel iconSo you wanna be a fashion designer? You may have some great sketches and great ideas, but do you know how to balance your money records, do your taxes, register your company name and trademark your designs?

When you have a creative mind, turning that into a business can be tricky and challenging (and frankly, not nearly as much fun.) That’s why there are pros who can help you out.

This week, another FABulous fashion and business event took place with the FAB Counsel offering a panel discussion of business, marketing and finance needs when you’re thinking of starting a fashion business.

IMG_5935

On the panel:

  • Mary Vallarta, Founder of FAB Counsel speaking on marketing strategy
  • Members of the Fashion Law Group – speaking on trademarks and intellectual property
  • Alexandra Scoggin: VP of Business Development at Bibby Financial (and one ultra stylish lady in her own right!) speaking on getting business loans
  • Members of PMA Accounting Services – speaking on financial record-keeping and taxes for small businesses

Every member of the panel may work in the not-so-glamorous tasks of dealing with financials and paperwork, but they all had a passion for fashion and helping start-up entrepreneurs.

IMG_5939

Some notes I came away with:

– Before you start a business, do your research. Know the market and the demographics of your customers.

– Know your competition and learn from them.

– Don’t over-reach, go niche. Gain people’s attention and spread your voice.

– Law may not be the sexiest part of your business but it’s  something you need to know

– Don’t skimp on marketing. You have to get your name out there and do it well.

– Don’t be afraid to ask for help, there are professionals out there who know how to do what you don’t.

– Choosing a business entity is all about minimizing risk

– You have to understand your finances. You need to know how much it cosst to produce each item and what you can afford to sell it for.

– Keep a separate bank account just for your business. You’ll need a DBA fictitious business name to start a bank account under a business name.

– There has been a spike in sole proprietorship audits. Get a CPA  to help you with your financials, then you have the time to be the creative that you are.

And an extra bonus of the night was the location in Tarina Tarantino flagship boutique on Melrose, where it was eye-candy galore in this very pink and ultra girly store chock full of their signature chunky, playful, blingy jewelry and rhinestone encrusted cosmetics. As an extra bonus, we also heard some words of wisdom from Tarina Tarantino’s head of marketing.

So if you’re looking to set out on your own fashion biz, check out upcoming FAB Counsel events, they offer the knowledge you need!

Be FABulous,

Dress Like Mad Men

k150_19heel iconWith just a few days to go before the premiere of Season 6 of Mad Men,  I figured it was time to let you in on some secrets I know in how to live the Mad Men lifestyle – mainly how to dress and drink like our favorite characters. Today’s blog post will let you in on how to shop for the looks seen on the show.

While I have always love ‘60s fashions for their fun silhouettes and bold colors, Mad Men has brought those styles back with a distinction all their own. Now when I go out in my best ‘60s era vintage I’m told,  “you dress so Mad Men,” which I of course take as a compliment because I love the show so much.

k_jbryant1Part of the reason I love it is the care they’ve taken to get every detail right to recreate the decade of so many cultural shifts. Part of that credit goes to costume designer Janie Bryant, who I had the pleasure of meeting during a book signing at my favorite vintage store in Burbank:

Vintage Playclothes

The store not only has supplied some of the amazing vintage seen on the show but it is such a joy to shop in. It’s in a gorgeous space with frescoed ceilings, the clothes are tagged by era, everything piece is in nearly perfect condition, they have a HUGE inventory of women’s and men’s wear at fantastic prices and the staff is super friendly and helpful.

vintagePlayclothes1

vintagePlayclothes2

Clever Vintage Clothing

Another vintage source that has amazing owners is Clever Vintage who I’ve frequently featured in this blog because not only are co-owners Dave and Sabino so knowledgeable about their fashion history and doing custom styling, the are also fabulous party pals! Dave and Sabino travel all across the country to curate their vintage treasures. You can purchase their fine pieces at one of the many shows they participate in, including Helm’s Design District Vintage Boutique and Burbank Pickwick. Check the events page on their website for upcoming dates or make an appointment at their downtown showroom.  They did wardrobe for Peggy and Betty in two separate episodes. Remember these outfits?

It was a genius move of marketing to get a major department store to work with Janie Bryant to design a line of contemporary clothing with a retro feel and make it accessible to everyone.  Banana Republic has been launching a new Mad Men collection at  the start of each season for the past few years and this one is no exception. Bold patterns and rich colors are featured here.  And these are great pieces for me to wear to work and still have a mod feel since I don’t dare subject my delicate vintage to long office hours.

Check out their inspiration and behind the scenes of the collection here.

And get 25% off through April 30 with this coupon.

What Katie Did Lingerie

Now, even your best vintage won’t look authentic unless you have the right undergarments.  Want to look and walk like Joan? Put yourself into one of these corsets and not only will you have an hourglass figure like you’ve never seen, but you’ll just WALK in a different way, a SEXY way!

What Katie Did specializes in designs influences by the glamour of the ‘40s and ‘50s film stars but with contemporary fabric and structure. Plus, were else can you find a gorgeous bullet bra these days?

And if you can’t get your hand on any of these clothes, you can always dress up virtually and “Mad Men Yourself” through the AMC website:

madmenYourself_sceneSZD

So if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go get dressed up and mix a cocktail. Can’t wait for Season 6, starting on April 7th!

Stay tuned for Part II of Mad Men series next week where I show you more of how you can live the Mad Men lifestyle!

Now go shop!

Oscar Night 2013

k150_19heel iconOscar night is always a big night – whether you stay home in your PJs or head to a swanky party.  Being a big movie goer, I had my picks for the winners and I had a fancy dress that was perfect for a big Oscar party at the Egyptian Theatre that I was invited to by my pal Margot. It’s not every day you get to watch TV on a big movie screen and seeing the stars in this way certainly makes it a special event. Margot invited a group of friends for a private party to watch the show right across the street from the big event itself! I invited along my pals Dave and Sabino of Clever Vintage Clothing to Tweet along with me about the fashions and winner reactions.

Some thoughts on fashions:

Best: Jennifer Lawrence, Nicole Kidman, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Amy Adams and of course, Helen Hunt for wearing an affordable, eco-friendly H&M gown.

Worst: Barbra Streisand channeling Cher, Jane Fonda – too ’80s and George Clooney going Kris Kringle with his grey beard.

Some thoughts on the wins:

I couldn’t not have been happier that Argo won for best picture! Period.

And now some pix from our Oscar night:
