New Girl Expo: Shopping, Demos and Bloggers

k150_23SZDheel iconThe New Girl Expo opened its doors in LA this past weekend to allow us girls to do some serious holiday gift shopping. Taking place at the California Mart Downtown, there were vendors filling the floorspace with shopping opportunities from makeup to purses, jewelry, clothes and hair extensions. There were also several makeup demos and even a pole dancing demo from X-Pole.

On the main stage there was a fashion show and demo from Klix makeup brushes, whose eco-friendly, replaceable brush heads proved to be the most popular booth of the day. One of my favorites vendors was the All Things Girly handbag booth, particularly their magazine covered clutch purses.

There were also beauty and fashion blogger panels, hosted by Roxy Limon talking about what it takes to be a blogger and what inspires them to share their looks and product finds. (See blogger list below.)

And when it all became too much, you could step over to the Tasting Lounge for free drinks and treats.

Reading: Jerry Stahl, DH Peligro, Jack Grisham, Iris Berry

k150_23SZDheel iconI’m a writer. It’s been my calling since I was a kid. For luck or talent, I’ve made a career of it, writing for major newspapers and blogging for corporations and for myself. I have a memoir that’s been in the works for as long as I can remember. Writing is hard and it’s always personal. Hemingway once said, “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.” That’s why I always get so inspired when I go to readings by those I respect.  Recently, I attended a reading at Stories Books in Echo Park  where writing and punk rock collided.

Iris Berry
First up was  Iris Berry, one of LA’s iconic scenesters for her bands The Ringling Sisters and Lame Flames. Iris was always known as a rocker and a poet, her bands often working spoken word and jazz riffs into their songs. She’s now a publisher at Punk Hostage Press with an impressive roster of writers. For her reading, from her book “Daughters of Bastards,”* it felt like a slam poetry session, with guitar accompaniment from Fred Spigelman. Iris poured out the hard feelings, leaving the audience in awe of her honesty. Nice job.

irisBerrySZD

DH Peligro
Next up, DH Peligro, long-time drummer for the punk band, The Dead Kennedys, read from his memoir, “Dreadnaught: King of Afropunk.”* But it felt less like a reading and more like just a night of hanging out. Peligro often lost his place while reading and just took off his glasses and told the stories from memory about his old punk days in San Francisco, about being too scared to go up to Joe Strummer and coming to LA on the advice of Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was like a night around the campfire with this talented writer/musician.

DHPeligroSZD

Jack Grisham
Jack Grisham, of the legendary SoCal band TSOL was up next and he was having a bad day, starting off his reading by proclaiming that pretty much everywhere he goes something bad happens, especially around the holidays. And boy did his book “Untamed”* have some stories! He admitted that though he writes about “fictional” characters, all of them have a little bit of himself in them. Clearly he’s had quite a life.  He said he felt a little unprepared for this reading, but the audience didn’t feel it. His stories and personality were so entertaining, you couldn’t help but want more.

JackGrishamSZD

Jerry Stahl
Last but certainly not least, was one of my favorite writers, Jerry Stahl, author of one of my all-time favorite books, “Permanent Midnight.”* Jerry may not be known for being in a punk band (he’s a very successful screenwriter) but he’s punk rock for sure. He read from his latest, “Happy Mutant Baby Pills,”*  stories of a guy who writes the side effect warnings for prescription drugs and ponders the lyrical appeal of the term, “anal leakage.” Even Jerry himself had to pause and tell the audience, “When you’re writing something at 3 a.m., you don’t imagine having to say it in front of a roomful of people!” This one is definitely going on my reading list!

Review: Bettie Page Reveals All

k150_23SZDheel iconPinup model Bettie Page has been both an icon and a mystery. The now legendary image of a smiling young girl with long, stark black hair, blunt bangs, red lips, dancing blue eyes and gorgeous figure captured people’s imagination and turned men on since she began modeling in New York in the 1950s.

But, during what seemed to be the peak of her popularity as a model, Bettie disappeared. Over the next few decades, the images of her as a sexy siren, a carefree beach bunny and naughty dominatrix grew to iconic proportions.

used in the Dita von Teese video

But where was Bettie? The documentary film, “Bettie Page Reveals All” finally traces the long hard road Bettie took to become a pinup model, her fall from grace, and return to the spotlight.

The film features a wealth of images and footage of Bettie’s modeling days. You find yourself never tiring of looking at her; she’s so captivating. Miraculously told in the voice of Bettie herself, the filmmakers were able to have the pinup queen narrate her own true story throughout most of the film. We don’t see images of her as an older woman because she wanted people to remember her as she was, but we hear her emotions as she tells her tale with surprising candor. While it’s hard to imagine some of the experiences this beautiful, beloved woman went through, it’s almost a relief to know the story does have a happy ending. Bettie Page passed away in December 2008 at age 85 knowing of her legendary status.

“Bettie Page Reveals All,” directed by Academy Award® nominee, Mark Mori, opens in New York Nov. 22, LA Nov. 29 and in other select cities starting Dec. 6. See the website for locations and more details on the film.  It is a must-see for any fan of hers and pinup culture.

Bettie_Page_WikiComm

On a personal note, I was lucky enough to meet Bettie in person near the end of her life when she was  doing some publicity events. I was an editor at the Los Angeles Times and I assisted with an online chat with her hosted by CitySearch. I got to escort her from her car up to the offices and be there while she answered questions coming in from the chat boards. I can tell you, even in her older years, she was still beautiful. Though her figure was a little rounder, she still wore her signature red lipstick and her hair, though grey, was still in her famous blunt bangs. Meeting her is one of my most cherished memories. Seeing this film brought me back to that moment and I got to know more about Bettie than ever. She is forever an icon!

Pinup power!

Trip Report: Buenos Aires, Argentina

k150_23SZDheel iconEvery year I’ve been lucky enough to take one big vacation to a new place in the world that opens my eyes to new cultures. This year it was Buenos Aires, Argentina.

My boyfriend and I flew down to the “Paris” of South America for a week as the city was headed for springtime, but not before a week of cold and rainy weather.  Here’s what we found:

The City

While Buenos Aires is considered akin to a European city, I found it to be much more like New York. It has a very urban feel. Once elegant buildings with gorgeous wrought iron balconies and arched windows have given way to the decay of time and sadly, layer upon layer of graffiti throughout the city, though we found a few walls with more colorful, artistic murals. It’s bustling with people, jammed with traffic and it’s easier to get around by foot than by cab – and watch out for those cabbies, we got ripped off by a couple of them.

KCitySZD2

The Shopping

If you go to Buenos Aires, expect to shop. We stayed in the stylish Palermo Soho district, which is lined with boutique of designer stores, street fashion and fancy, pop culture knick knacks. Now after eating all that steak, they make use of their resources and offer some of the finest leather at fantastic prices. We also really enjoyed the huge market of San Telmo, filled with artisans making amazing knick-knacks. I picked up purse made from 45 records and a beautiful little stiletto shoe sculpture made of leather scraps constructed like paper mache.

sanTelmoMarketCollageSZD

I came upon the Silvia Y. Mario Leather Factory, where the sales people took great care in fitting me with a custom made jacket made from the leather of my choosing – so soft and tailored, I feel like Cat Woman every time I put it on! And later I picked up some fabulous tango shoes at an exclusive little boutique called Comme Il Faut.

See the video of my shopping highlights of the city:

The Culture

The stylish shadow of Evita, Argentina’s long-loved, ill-fated first lady is still everywhere. We ate our first meal at the Evita Restaurant. We later visited the Evita Museum dedicated to her memory, where the best part for me was the multiple display cases of her gorgeous clothes. She was a fashionable one, believing having a well-coifed, glamorous image served as an inspiration to her people. Thus loads of beautiful designer vintage clothes are a big highlight of the museum. We also visited her final resting place in what has to be one of the most stunning cemeteries in the world, the Cementerio Recoleta, filled with sky-high mausoleums of Argentina’s most rich and famous.

EvitaCollageSZD

The city’s culture also focuses on food – it’s steak and more steak of the finest cut. When we weren’t eating steak we had scrumptious empanadas and oh, wait for it, the sweet, decadent deliciousness of Dolce De Leche. Yes, I brought home TWO jars! Yum!

dolce

Buenos Aires is known for the tango, however we didn’t find as much as we hoped. It seems it’s a pastime for only the most dedicated and a way to lure tourists into fancy Vegas-style shows. We opted for the more intimate and historical venue of Café Tortoni and though we missed the tango lessons at the equally famous Confiteria La Ideal we instead caught the fantastically fun show by Sergio Pangaro who reminded me of a cross between El Vez and Dean Martin with a groovy big band and  ’60s-style, go-go backup singer/dancers. I could see them being popular in LA.  Here’s a sample:

That’s it from Buenos Aires.
Adios!

LA Fashion Week 2013 Wrap-Up

k150_23SZDheel iconLA Fashion Week was a colorful, textured display of creative talent. I have to hand it to fashion designers – it’s not easy getting a collection off the ground and putting on a show. I attended shows nearly every night of the weeklong affair and saw so many pretty and unique takes on style for the 2014 Spring/ Summer season for women’s fashion.

Many of the shows were major productions with music acts and performance artists coming out between runway walks. It was awe-inspiring to see the slinky professional models doing their best catwalk but I also enjoyed the more edgy vibe of Mad Girl Productions’ Sugar Art & Fashion Show where the models were encouraged to show a little rebel personality or do some wild primal dances (it does make it a little harder to get pictures of the clothes however!)

Click here to see a video of my three tops picks for designs I would most want to own: Sue Wong, Nuvula, and Emily Daccarett.

Here is some of the eye candy from the week:

LA Fashion Week 2013: My Three Top Picks

k150_23SZDheel iconLA Fashion Week has been happening all over Tinsel Town this week with fashion shows from Downtown to Hollywood. My dance card has been rather full trying to hit as many events as possible to check some well-known and emerging designers. Lots of women’s fashion ideas for Spring/Summer 2014. Each event has been its own creative feast for the eyes and I must say the people watching in the audience has been almost as entertaining. The fashion crowd knows how to pull out some style! I saw a lot of bling, stilettos and general “bring it” attitude. A nice change from going out and seeing people in flip-flops and track suits (which pains my eyes!)

Most of the shows have featured several designer showcases back to back and few music acts and performance artists to mix things up. While some fashion collections I was admittedly underwhelmed by, three stood out to me for ultra unique silhouettes, interesting cuts, use of textures and patterns. And of course, my picks all seem to have a little retro influence (what can I say, I love that!) but use it in very modern, wearable ways.

My favorites included:

The Social Scene and Street Fashion of Social Media Week LA 2013

k150_23SZDheel iconIf you love social media like I do, a whole week of discussions, Tweeting, Facebooking and Instagraming with like-minds is like being dropped in a little connected oasis. And that’s just what happened when a major digital marketing conference descended on the westside of Los Angeles. See what happened when I checked out the social scene and street fashion of Social Media Week LA 2013

The Social Scene of Social Media Week

Most of the events took place at ROC’s collaborative workspace headquarters in Santa Monica as hundreds of mobile-device-carrying social enthusiasts went from panel discussions to masterclasses to parties. I attended every day and got a headful of ideas to take back to my social media efforts for world domination!

story2

story1

Celebrity Faces of Social Media Week

Of course, some of my favorite events included those focused on the ever-exploding online opportunities in fashion and beauty online including:

  • Rodger Berman CEO (and husband) of Rachel Zoe on the transformation and disruption of the fashion biz with the mega success of Rachel Zoe, Inc.
  • A panel featuring blogger Aimee Song, websites WhoWhatWear, StyleHaul and brands BeachMint, ShoeDazzle  and Junk Food Clothing on who’s winning when it comes to brand marketing promotion – celebrities or bloggers. Answer: the bloggers!
  • A chat with Michelle Phan, one of the best known beauty bloggers out there, discussing her career and the launch of her new cosmetics line “Em.” Plus, even more projects she has in the works!

story3

As a journalist turned blogger, I was also excited to see one of my favorite interviewers, Larry King, interviewing Star Trek star turned social media icon George Takei.

story6

The Street Fashion of Social Media Week

I also hit a fashion and beauty soiree where a roomful of fashionistas flaunted their best outfits and learned how to grow their presence online. See my previous blog post. I had good time style spotting all week. Here are some of the fashionable folks caught on the Stiletto-cam!

StylishCollage1

StylishCollage2

I loved having the opportunity to meet all the people at all the parties. And of course, I had lots of fun planning my daily outfits!

1. Dress by Clever Vintage, 2. Pants by PinupGirlClothing 3. Dress by Forever 21All clothing purchased by the author.

Plus, I was excited to discover so many amazing companies who are doing so much with content creation on the web. You were nothing short of inspiring – and I’ll be contacting you! I see some partnerships in my future!

As I gear up to build up this blog and relaunch my YouTube channel (stay tuned for details!) I’m thrilled at the possibilities that await. Stay tuned. I have lots in store for you.

Thanks Social Media Week for the fun and inspiration!

SMWLA The Style of Social Media: Fashion & Beauty Soiree

k150_23SZDheel iconSocial Media Week LA pulled in the city’s top talent in tech, social, entertainment, fashion and beauty to share, learn, snap photos and party for a week straight. My head has been spinning learning about all the amazing companies out there and exploring the potential of what can be done online. The sky seems the limit – especially when it comes to the fashion and beauty space.

I attended a very special panel discussion and evening soiree focused on just that at the Project Gallery in Hollywood. There I learned about best social platforms to be on, best times to post, and best practices for a successful presence online. Special thanks to the hosts Jackie Chambers, TGIF Guide and Bella Graham, Lipstick, Lace & Lattes and the panelists Style Fashion Week, Entertainment Reporter Nina Parker, Hello Society, 365 Hangers and Mark Quest of Forte-The Collective and of course, all the fashionable folks who attended who made for great style-spotting!

School’s In: Makeup Forever Mastery Classes

k150_23SZDheel iconI don’t think you can ever learn enough new tips when it comes to putting on makeup. Having someone show you how to use a product is a key selling point (look at how powerful YouTube videos have become!) One brand that seems to know this is Make Up Forever. I recently learned they offer Monday classes on how to use their makeup in various ways. I’ve loved the products I’ve tried from them and always see their products used by pro makeup artists, so I thought I’d try one out.

The class I attended was for “Ageless Beauty” and the goal was for skin to look lifted and dewy, no matter what your age. What I loved about the class is that you come with no makeup on (or wash it off there) and you get to put on a full face of makeup, trying Make Up Forever’s products and brushes. The Head Makeup Artist does a demo for each step on her model (another employee/artist there) and then you try it on your own face.

MakeupSchool

In my class, Talia was our instructor and she helped us pick out the right shade of each product and the right brush to use. We were lucky that the new Make Up Forever line of artisan brushes just came in and we got to use those. (They are fantastic!) She also asked if there were any products we’d been wanting to try. For me, it was the Mat Velvet Foundation and Pro Finish Powder.

This is what I learned and used,

FACE
Start with HD Microperfecting Primer

FOUNDATION
When applying foundation to the face,  start at the center of the face — from the side of the nose out across the cheeks — when the brush has the most product on it for the most coverage. Then use a fluffy brush to buff it out. I use flat brush number 176.

For the demo, Talia used the Liquid Lift Foundation for an “ageless”, dewy look. It provides a sheer to medium coverage look. I used the Mat Velvet Foundation and fell in love with its creamy texture, full coverage and matte finish. Great for pinup looks that I usually wear!

CONCEALER
We used the Full Coverage Concealer, a product I have at home and love. It does just that – it will cover anything from blemishes to hyper-pigmentation to scars with a smooth, silicon-based finish.

For the demo, Talia suggested the concealer can be used under the eyes for dark circles and on the eyelids as a primer but I did not have good luck with this. It felt too heavy for those areas and went into the fine lines under my eyes.

proArtistTaliaSZD

HIGHLIGHT DEFINITION
Talia explained that the concealer can also be used as a face-sculpting highlighter by choosing a concealer color that is a shade or two lighter than the face (I usually use foundation for this) and applying with a flat brush high on the cheeks near the eye, above and below the eyebrows at the arch, and on the bridge of the nose.

CONTOUR
When contouring, start at the top of the ear and brush in to contour just under the top of the cheekbone. Do not put contour at the side of the face, it will make the face look droopy. You want a lifting effect. I used brush number 152.

BLUSH
For a dewy look, cream blushes are better than powder. HD Microfinish Blush First Kiss number 12, which is a bright apricot color that I really loved. The creamy formula blended right in for a natural glow. I used brush number 140.

POWDER
Buff powder on places where the face tends to get shiny or all over for a more matte finish. I found the Mat Velvet Foundation really didn’t need much power but I got to try one of my wish list items, the Pro Finish Powder in number 117.

makeupTools

BRONZER
Bronzer goes along the jawline and anywhere the sun might naturally hit. I used the Mat Bronzer in number 20.

HIGHLIGHT ILLUMINIZING
For an illuminating highlight to make cheekbones and other high-points pop, we tried the Uplight Face Luminizer Gel but I found the liquid broke up the mat foundation and looked splotchy. I repaired the foundation and decided to try a powder highlight instead, using the Star Powder in 940, which is a light iridescent white/pink/orange shimmer. That looked amazing! I used brush number 144.

EYEBROWS
We used Aqua Brow and Talia taught us to mark the darkest point first, which is at the arch, then extend the intensity of color out toward the temple. You will want a lighter hand closer into toward the nose.

EYESHADOW
We learned a “lift” technique when applying eyeshadow to create the illusion of “ageless” eyes. Pat a light shadow such as number 125 on the lid with a flat brush. Then use a black or brown Kohl Pencil liner and mark the center of the eyelid the outside point and the lower center point, then connect the dots. Pull the liner up to an outer “V”. Then blend in until the black line is buffed out but not so much that you lose the line. Use a brownish color to fill in the “V” a little bit, then pop of bright color in the center.

LIPS
Mark the cupids bow and the outer corners with a lip pencil and connect the dots. I used the Aqua Lip Waterproof Lip Liner in number 4c.

We got to try the new 5-lipstick Rouge Artist Palettes (available only in the Make Up Forever Boutiques). The color I used was number 25 intense, I believe from the Coral palette.  It was a nice creamy formula of highly pigmented color.

SET TO STAY
Set the face with Mist & Fix Spray – 3 light sprays should do it. This formula helps hold makeup without a lot of touch ups.

I was pretty happy with my final look and walked out of there with a few new goodies. You get a 20% discount on purchases when you take a class – can’t beat that!

agelessBeautyCollage

For upcoming classes, check the schedule on the Make Up Forever website. Classes are held Mondays at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Cost $25. Attendees get a 20% off shopping discount.
They also offer more personalized MakeUp School sessions to learn makeup just for you. Read more.

My school days were never this fun!
