ReVamp Vintage / What Katie Did Burlesque Fashion Show

k150_23SZDheel iconLadies, how many times have you felt your lingerie is so pretty, you just wish everyone could see it?  That’s definitely the case with What Katie Did Lingerie – the retro-inspired lingerie brand that recreates the sexy looks of silver screen starlets of the ‘40s and ‘50s. They recently paired with one of my favorite vintage reproduction designers, ReVamp Vintage, for a fashion show unlike any other.

Click the video below to see the show!

The catwalk took the form of a classic burlesque routine. Models provided a seductive but elegant and playful tease – we’re keeping it PG folks! – showing off ReVamp dresses and pantsuits on the outside, then stripping down to their What Katie Did Lingerie underneath. It was a great way to showcase both designers – and as expected, the crowd went wild!

Look of the Day: Faux Fur Punk

k150_23SZDheel iconIn my personal style, I like to mix things up. It’s usually a combination of looks I’ve always been attracted to: punk, mod, elegant vintage and modern trends. Today I was feeling some punky women’s fashion. With the weather turning cooler, it’s time to pull out a fluffy, faux-fur vest, pencil skirt and some fun checkered boots. I added a funky statement necklace and bold lipstick.

Vest purchased at TopShop London.  Boots from Amazon.com.

FabCounsel: Connecting with Style

k150_17heel iconAt a recent networking party, I met Mary Vallarta, a petite dynamo in the fashion industry who has a passion for what’s trending in style, a head for business and a special social skill for connecting people. Having a background as a buyer and plenty of experience in the fashion biz, she decided to put her know-how to and connections to good use. She founded the FabCounsel to help people succeed in the fashion industry.

FabCounsel provides a wealth of resouces on how to break into the industry on its online site and Mary (pictured here) hosts events around town to give people interested in the industry the opportunity to meet and learn from each other. I recently attended her event “How To IMG_5811.jpgSell Your Fashion Line to Buyers and Retailers,” which took place downtown at chic boutique Brigade. A roomful of fashionistas filled the room to hear from esteemed panelists that  included: Alicia Allen, Director of Men’s Apparel for HauteLook, who spoke from her work in the corporate retail world, Kuo Yang, owner & founder of Brigade sharing his perspective as a small boutique owner and what he looks for in buying people’s lines to carry in his store, and Vanessa Lee, an experienced sales executive who’s worked with companies including Eight Sixty, Collective Concepts, Creative Commune, Daniel Rainn. She shared her knowledge in the art of selling, how to approach buyers, what to prep for before a sales meeting, what to bring to the meetings, how to follow up.

Some notes:

  • You have 15-20 seconds to make your pitch – know how to sell what you’re offering.
  • Know your target – where you fit in the market and the void that you fill.
  • Build your contacts – people want to do business with people they know.
  • Incentivize – offer something to get you in, a partial commission or something creative.
  • Build great collateral – line sheets and a look book that shows your designs. Get press clippings.
  • This is LA, go after celebrities and gift them items. While New York and Paris have the big fashion shows, we have red carpets. Those are our fashion shows.

Afterwards there was plenty of mingling, shopping and of course, checking out each other’s outfits! Here are the party pix:

PARTY PIX: Vintage Vortex 5 Opening Party

k150_16heel icon

I love a good opening party, especially when it involves vintage clothing, memorabilia and some of LA’s coolest retro-lovin’ scenesters. This past weekend I found myself at the opening of Vintage Vortex 5, a new space on Sunset in Los Feliz that features a collection of vintage vendors selling their best stuff. I spotted amazing handbags and shoes, a collection of vintage lunch boxes, a Barbie ballerina bag, a mod checkered shoe bag, ‘60s and ‘70s evening gowns, sweet ‘50s pleated dresses, and Cher-worthy fringed numbers.

But best of all I spotted some great people! Check out the party pix:

Love of Vintage

There are times I feel I was born in the wrong era. I simply love the fashions of past decades, namely the 1920s-1960s. There is something about how the clothes are so feminine, the cuts so divine, the materials so exquisite and the silhouettes that make a statement. I have a hard time walking into a vintage clothing store without leaving with SOMETHING – a dress, a handbag, a hat, some jewelry. Vintage shopping is the ultimate treasure hunt, because these items are rare survivors of the past, they don’t come in a rack-ful of sizes, they aren’t all in perfect condition. So when you find that one piece that happens to fit, isn’t damaged and is at a good price, you just CAN’T leave it there in the store!

Which is why I went home with two new dresses from The Loved One last week. I’d heard about this little Pasadena store from a friend and when they posted on Facebook that they were having a “cocktails ‘n’ shopping” party, well, I just can’t pass up that combo! Turned out to be the cutest little shop, all the clothes are in great condition and the setting is nicely art directed, which makes the shopping experience all the better. Can’t wait to wear my new treasures!
